What "you own everything" actually means
Plenty of agencies build your site and quietly keep the keys. Here is what real ownership looks like, and the questions that flush out who holds them.
"You own everything" is an easy thing to say and a harder thing to mean. A lot of marketing relationships look great until you try to leave, and then you find out how much of your own business you were renting.
The stuff you should own, in your name
- Your website and domain. Not parked on the agency's account. Yours.
- Your ad accounts. The history, the data, the audiences you paid to build.
- Your tracking and analytics. The record of what worked and what did not.
- Your customer and lead data. The list is the asset. It should be yours.
If any of those live inside an account you do not control, you do not own your growth. You are borrowing it, and the lender can change the terms.
How to tell before you sign
You do not need to be technical to find out. You just need to ask plainly and listen for a straight answer.
- If we part ways, what do I keep, and is it already in my name today?
- Whose account holds my ads, my site, and my data right now?
- Can I see my own tracking, or do I get a monthly slide instead?
- Is there a contract, an exit fee, or a notice period?
Clear answers are a good sign. Vague ones, or a lot of "do not worry about that," tell you who really holds the keys.
